Parental Involvement

The Parental Involvement Act outlines three areas where parents should be supported and encouraged to be more involved in their child’s learning:

  • At home – providing information on what their children are learning at school and how this can best be supported at home

  • At school – providing opportunities to contribute to the life of the school, for example by helping out in the classroom, or at school events

  • In a more formal way – deciding what kind of parent representation schools should have

Under the Parental Involvement Act, as a parent of a child in attendance at Alves Primary School, you are automatically part of what is called the Parent Forum for the school. This means that you have a right to be involved in deciding what type of parent representation we should have in the school. The term used for Parent representation in the Act is Parent Council. This is a smaller group of parents who would work with the school to represent the views of all the parents at the school.
In August 2007, Alves Primary Parent Council was formed and has made a very positive start to supporting the school by working with and consulting with parents, pupils and staff on a new homework policy. The draft policy is expected to be available for consultation on Monday 10th March, 2008.
